Ca’Marcanda
COUNTRY: ITALY
REGION: BOLGHERI
Ca’ Marcanda was established by Angelo Gaja in 1996 as his first major venture outside Piemonte, motivated by the potential he saw in Bolgheri’s coastal terroir. The estate’s name — from Piedmontese for “house of endless negotiations” — reflects the extended talks required to acquire the property. Vineyards (c. 100–120 ha) lie close to the Tyrrhenian Sea, planted on diverse alluvial soils: darker clay-rich “terre brune” and gravelly, limestone-rich “terre bianche” that retain heat and ensure superb drainage. The Mediterranean climate delivers warm days and cooling breezes, promoting ripeness with freshness. Gaja planted Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah for red blends, and Vermentino/Viognier for whites. Winemaking blends careful extraction and French oak ageing to produce wines that are structured yet refined, with aromatic depth, saline freshness and terroir clarity — from the approachable Promis and Magari to the flagship Ca’Marcanda.
