COUNTRY: ITALY

REGION: TUSCANY

SUB-REGION: BOLGHERI

Tenuta San Guido is one of Italy’s most legendary estates, founded by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in the 1940s when he planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on the gravelly, clay-infused soils of Bolgheri, noting their similarity to Bordeaux’s Graves. Sassicaia remained a family-only wine until the 1968 vintage, first released commercially in 1971 with critical success that helped redefine Italian fine wine. In 1994, Sassicaia became the first single-estate DOC in Italy (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC). The warm Mediterranean climate, moderated by proximity to the sea and cool night breezes, ensures full phenolic ripeness while preserving acidity. San Guido’s vineyards (c. 75 ha) are rigorously managed with low yields and precise canopy work. The iconic Sassicaia exhibits powerful yet elegant structure, deep cassis and mineral notes, fine tannins and long ageing potential.
