COUNTRY: ITALY

REGION: SICILY

SUB-REGION: ETNA

Idda is a joint venture between Angelo Gaja and Sicilian grower Alberto Graci, launched in 2016 to explore Etna’s volcanic terroir on Sicily’s southern slopes. “Idda” — Sicilian dialect for “she” — refers affectionately to Mount Etna itself, Europe’s largest active volcano. The estate owns roughly 20 ha of vineyards (600–800 m asl) around Belpasso and Biancavilla planted primarily to Carricante for whites and Nerello Mascalese for reds. Soils are volcanic ash, lava and basalt-infused with excellent drainage, while warm days and cooling nights preserve acidity and build complexity. The wines reflect this terroir: the Bianco shows crisp citrus and saline minerality with textured depth, and the Rosso offers fine tannin structure, fresh acidity and volcanic mineral tension — a contemporary expression of Etna’s distinct geology and climate.
