Mt. Beautiful
COUNTRY: NEW ZEALAND
REGION: NORTH CANTERBURY
Mount Beautiful is a distinguished estate in the Waipara Valley of North Canterbury, a relatively young but increasingly respected New Zealand wine region that has rapidly gained attention for its unique terroir and elegant, balanced wines. The property was identified and established in the early 2000s by David and Leigh Teece, who sought a site with distinctive soils and microclimates capable of producing world-class cool-climate wines. Nestled at the base of the Cheviot Hills with the Kaikoura Seaward Mountains to the north and the Pacific Ocean a short distance to the east, the vineyards benefit from a cool maritime influence, well-drained silt loam and clay soils and significant diurnal temperature shifts that preserve natural acidity, aromatic lift and structural precision across varietals. The estate embraces certified sustainable viticulture, tending its vines with minimal intervention, encouraging biodiversity and using thoughtful canopy and clonal selection to allow the land to express itself in every bottle.
Among the estate’s flagship wines is the Mt. Beautiful Sauvignon Blanc, distinguished by floral complexity and ripe tropical nuance while maintaining clarity and balance, showing how its site diverges from more overtly green styles. The Mt. Beautiful Riesling was the first wine the winery produced, planted on higher elevation blocks with careful clonal choice to yield a classically elegant profile of citrus and mineral detail. The Mt. Beautiful Chardonnay, planted in cooler northern blocks and hand-harvested, reflects its terroir with layered stone fruit, textural weight and persistent minerality that speaks to the site’s cool-climate pedigree.
